From the Desk of the CEO
Dear Families and Friends,
I hope you’re enjoying the summer—longer days, time with loved ones, and of course the sunshine. Throughout summer, and every day of the year, AHRC staff work with care and dedication to ensure the people we support lead healthy and connected lives in the community.
With the recent passage of the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act,” we are closely monitoring how changes to programs like Medicaid and SNAP may affect those we support. Learn more. We encourage you to let your elected officials know you care about these issues and share your perspective. We’ll continue to share updates and opportunities for advocacy as the impact becomes clearer.
Advocacy has always been central to AHRC’s mission. It began with our founding families and continues today through every voice raised in support of inclusion and equity. As July marks Disability Pride Month, we honor and renew our commitment to building a world where all people are respected and valued. Thank you for being part of this continuing effort. |

Timothy’s Recipe for Success: Chasing His Dream of Becoming a Chef |
|
---|
|
| On Thursday mornings around 10, Timothy Lettal searches for a quiet space in Freeport’s Program Without Walls location. Once finding a good spot, he logs into Google Classroom for his culinary lecture. Timothy learned of the class through Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) services, a career discovery and employment support resource.
Tim learned about ACCES-VR during a therapy session with Julie Cannet, Assistant Director for Psychology Services. |
|
---|
|
He joined ACCES-VR last fall where he began a two-week discovery course.
“They’ll assess you on math skills, learning and English skills, and then they’ll say, ‘You can try for food service, mechanic, childcare, whatever you want to do,’” said Tim. “I chose food service.” |

Where Every Gift Tells a Story: Catching Up With The One Stop Gift Shop |
|
---|
|
Jeanne Inglese proudly calls The One Stop Gift Shop her store. Jeanne takes great pride in her role—completing inventory checks, assisting with displays, and connecting with customers—supported every step of the way by Anne Giaramita, Store Manager and DSP.
“I love Anne. The best is helping the customers out and wrapping,” said Jeanne, who has interned at The One Stop Gift Shop for years. |
| |
---|
|
Now a mentor, Jeanne Inglese appreciates the opportunity to share what she’s learned with fellow interns at The One Stop Gift Shop. Recently, Jeanne sat down with fellow intern Desiree Mitchem to help with folding, counting, and how to tie the signature One Stop Gift Shop bow that completes every sale. |

Volunteer Spotlight: Isha Dua Connects With AHRC Nassau Community Members |
|
---|
|
High school sophomore Isha Dua has become a familiar, friendly face at AHRC Nassau’s recreation events—whether she’s handing out snacks at Saturday bowling or setting up decorations on a Thursday night.
Since beginning her volunteer work with the agency in February, Isha has become a trusted source of support. She might be found cleaning up a spill, assisting the event lead, or asking an attendee about their day. |
| |
---|
|
Isha’s volunteering supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate in recreational activities. These activities are important outlets for people to express themselves, connect with others, and simply have fun.
“I love the dances the most because I get to interact more,” said Isha. “We have conversations, dance together and one time, somebody gave me a drawing of Stitch. I really love it.” |
