From the Desk of the CEO

Dear Families and Friends,

It has been an incredible summer for people supported across our agency. This is especially true when self-advocates have access to services that uplift them to contribute to their community. Whether it is through employment, introductions to Nassau County neighbors, or the therapeutic art of dance, there are so many ways to empower people with disabilities to deepen connections and pursue their interests.

This is why I bring your attention to the ways you can advocate for the people who provide these critical supports—Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). The services that DSPs provide ensure the health, independence, and inclusion of people with disabilities. It’s imperative that they are recognized. This August, here are two ways you can share your support:

•    Submit a comment by Today, August 12, and add your voice to the public record on the importance of creating a unique Standard Occupational Classification code for DSPs to increase data collection and informed funding decisions on this role. This effort is led by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). Check out their policies and guidelines for more information on how to submit a comment.

•    Send an email to policymakers through our one-click campaign letting them know you support the “Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act” (S.1332/H.R. 2941).

Thank you for your continued support and advocacy for our community. Only in coming together with one united voice can we ensure the recognition and resources for DSPs match the important outcomes they create every day.

Best regards,

Stanfort J. Perry

Inspiring Visit to John’s Crazy Socks

This summer, people supported by AHRC Day Services visited John's Crazy Socks’ warehouse in Farmingdale. The company is a well-known retailer of bright socks and as an employer of people with disabilities. The visits were initiated by AHRC’s activities team as an inspiring reminder of what is possible when a person receives the support to bring their ideas to life. Men and women attended tours in groups of 5-6 with their support staff and had the opportunity to learn from John Cronin (the John of “John’s Crazy Socks) ask questions, and pack orders.

John is a person with a disability who founded “John’s Crazy Socks” with his father. After John graduated from high school, they went on a mission together to spread happiness and in doing so built a social enterprise that incapsulated John’s love of whimsical socks.

Upon arriving for the tour, attendees were greeted in a conference room where they watched a video detailing John’s journey into entrepreneurship. Then, they were led to the production floor where they saw the magic happen. Nakia Bills, who receives services in Farmingdale, was surprised at the sheer number of products on display.

“My favorite thing was seeing the big space,” said Nakia. “There were a lot of boxes of socks everywhere.”

Supported Employment Program (SEMP)

Robert Drebski has been working at a local gym in Baldwin for the past three years. He is part of our SEMP (Supported Employment) program and is supported on workdays by Employment Training Specialist, Cathy Hawkins.

Virtual Dance Instructor Spreads Joy and Positivity to
People Supported With Day Services

Every Thursday, people supported in AHRC’s Oceanside, Carle Place, and Seaford day services sites log on to Zoom to enjoy an interactive hour filled with music and dancing. The virtual dance sessions are led by Bhawna Sudhir, affectionately known as “Miss B.,” a long-time agency volunteer who’s been giving back for nearly a decade.

“In 2016, we moved to Bethpage, Long Island, to ensure our son, who is on the high-functioning autism spectrum, could attend the best special education school district,” said Miss B.

“I noticed the AHRC day program site and offered my time on a weekly basis.”

Miss B. has been conducting Zoom dance classes since 2020 and continued after pandemic restrictions lifted. By conducting class over Zoom, she can offer therapeutic dance services to all 30 day service sites that are interested. During her class, people are engaged, get on their feet, and practice dance steps.

Heather Tiniakos, who attends the Oceanside site, loves the classes and is a huge fan of Miss B. She rarely misses class since starting in February of this year. What she enjoys most about the dances is the clever use of props.

Sexuality and Socialization Specialist Pam Boyle Retires After
Decades Fostering Connection and Meaningful Relationships

Sexuality and Socialization Specialist, Pamela “Pam” Boyle, has been with the agency since 2001. She tackled topics that include sex education, friendship, and relationships. She also counseled and led social groups for people supported. After spending over two decades with the agency, Pam has successfully helped the people we support develop friendships, romantic partnerships and become strong advocates in their community. This August, Pam retired from her role and is continuing her work in private practice.

She is proud of her partnership with PrideAbility—an organization that supports people with disabilities who identify as LGBTQ+—and notes that the agency has made a commitment to support the initiative even after she leaves. Current PrideAbilty President Christian Hamlet was empowered by Pam to seek a leadership in the organization. They worked together for nearly five years. Throughout that time, he started looking for a way to contribute to his community.

“In my therapy I started getting stronger and really find myself, as a gay man, and to be okay with myself. And I got to a point where I was like ‘you know what, I’m ready,’” Christian said.

“So I went to Pam, and asked if there was any type of advocacy I could do, specifically for the LGBTQ+ community.”
